Whitehouse Applauds Passage of Bill to Combat Harmful Algal Blooms

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) issued the following statement today concerning the passage of the bipartisan Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control Amendments Act, to promote better understanding and response to harmful algal blooms and hypoxia – or low levels of dissolved oxygen – in our nation’s waterways:

“Harmful algal blooms and low-oxygen dead zones threaten Americans’ health, our fisheries, and coastal tourism and recreation,” said Whitehouse, co-chair of the Senate Oceans Caucus and cosponsor of the bill.  “This legislation will help us learn more about these serious problems, improve the technology for dealing with their effects, and allow coastal communities to better respond when they occur.  I applaud the passage of this bill and look forward to seeing it put into action.”
