Whitehouse in Egypt with McCain

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) is currently traveling abroad with a Senate delegation that includes Senator John McCain (R-AZ).  The Senators held a press conference today in Cairo, Egypt after meeting with leading Egyptian officials, including President Mohamed Morsi, Prime Minister Hesham Qandil, and Minister of Defense Major General Abdel Fattah al Sisi.  They also met with political party representatives and activists, Egyptian business leaders, and the Syrian Opposition Council.

“Egypt is undergoing a historic transition and I was glad to hear from Egyptian leaders as the country takes steps toward democracy,” said Whitehouse.  “Egypt continues to be an important ally in the Mideast, and in my meetings I stressed the importance of preserving that alliance, abiding by international commitments, including those with Israel, and working toward peace in the region.”

The Senators will continue traveling in the region for the next several days.
