Whitehouse Meets with Cuban Cardinal

Senator Thanks Catholic Leader for Role in Agreement on U.S.-Cuba Relations

Washington, DC – During his visit to Cuba this past weekend, U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) met with Cardinal Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino, Archbishop of Havana, and thanked him for the pivotal role he played in the recent agreement to improve relations between the U.S. and Cuba and free an imprisoned American aid worker.  Whitehouse was visiting as part of the first Congressional Delegation to travel to Cuba since the Obama Administration announced the historic U.S.-Cuba agreement in December.

“It was an honor to speak with His Eminence and thank him for the part he played in forging an agreement between the United States and Cuba,” said Whitehouse.  “His compassion and foresight have helped to free an American prisoner and bring the American and Cuban people closer together.”

Whitehouse also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the Pope for acknowledging the need to protect our planet and to address changing climate.
