Sheldon's Highest Legislative Priorities

  • Economic Opportunity and Shared Prosperity

Creating good jobs and helping Rhode Islanders build toward a secure retirement will always be my top priority. When our economy tanked after the 2008 financial crisis, I worked tirelessly to bring federal resources to our state, including $2.5 billion in Recovery Act funds. Both employment and the housing markets have rebounded in Rhode Island, but too many families still are working hard just to make ends, and don't feel confident in their and their children's futures. That's why I'm fighting to ensure economic security for Rhode Islanders and to give our children a world-class public education, including the opportunity to go to college without taking on crushing debt.

  • Acting on Climate Change and Protecting Our Environment

As a member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works and cofounder of the Senate Climate Action Task Force, I'm fighting for smart solutions to address climate change and position Rhode Island as a leader in the clean energy economy. I also helped form the bipartisan Senate Oceans Caucus to protect our ocean and coasts for our, and future, generations.

  • Keeping America Safe and Honoring Those Who Served

Our government's most sacred responsibility is keeping Americans safe. The rise of ISIS and the growing specter of cyber-attack are two of the most significant and ever-changing threats we face. As the son of a Foreign Service officer, I recognize that the United States is, and must remain, a great force for peace in the world, working alongside our international partners and using all of our strengths - from our economy to our military - to build a safer and more secure future.

  • Strengthening Our Justice System and Democracy

As former Attorney General and United States Attorney for Rhode Island, I am committed to supporting our law enforcement officers, reforming our criminal justice system, and ensuring that all Americans have fair access to our courts.  Serving on the Senate Judiciary Committee, I have worked on commonsense measures to address the opioid scourge, improve gun safety laws, update sentencing in the federal prison system, and protect the sacred right of American citizens to vote. To ensure special interests don't stand in the way of progress on these and so many other critical issues, I have also helped lead the fight to give real teeth to our campaign finance laws, so that powerful interests cannot anonymously influence our elections.

  • Promoting Quality, Affordable Health Care

Rhode Islanders deserve high-quality, affordable health care. The Affordable Care Act expanded access to health insurance for millions of Americans, but there is still working to be done to lower costs and improve results. I work to protect and strengthen Medicare and Medicaid to ensure the benefits Rhode Islanders count on will be there when they need them.
