Sen. Whitehouse Statement on Nomination of Gina McCarthy to be EPA Administrator

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), co-chair of the Bicameral Task Force on Climate Change and a member of the Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, released the statement below today regarding President Obama’s nomination of Gina McCarthy to be the next Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):

“Gina McCarthy is an excellent choice to be our next EPA Administrator.  She served New England under both Republican and Democratic governors and has a distinguished track record here in Washington protecting public health as the Assistant Administrator of the EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation.  As the Assistant Administrator, Gina McCarthy crafted several key health standards, including the first-ever mercury standard for power plants which is expected to prevent up to 11,000 premature deaths, 130,000 asthma attacks, and provide as much as $240 million in health benefits each year.  I congratulate her on this well-earned nomination, and I look forward to taking part in her confirmation process.”
