Whitehouse Statement on Deal to Maintain Unemployment Benefits and Payroll Tax Cut

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) released the statement below today following the Senate’s passage of legislation to maintain unemployment insurance and preserve a payroll tax cut for middle class families:

“The Rhode Islanders I’ve heard from struggling to find work or to make ends meet in this tough economy will be pleased to get a little good news before the holidays. We were able to protect the payroll tax holiday for middle class families, and prevent as many as 9,800 unemployed Rhode Islanders from losing their unemployment benefits in the next two months. With Republicans once again threatening to shut down the government, we had to accept unpleasant demands, but I will keep fighting for the small businesses and manufacturers that are the backbone of our economy, and to create more jobs for out of work Rhode Islanders.”
