Whitehouse Statement on For the People Act Vote

Washington, DC – Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, pledged to continue the fight to pass the For the People Act (S.1.), which Republicans blocked in the Senate today. Whitehouse’s DISCLOSE Act—legislation to combat the scourge of dark money in American democracy—is a central component of the bill, and has won support from across the Democratic caucus in the Senate. Whitehouse issued the following statement:

“This fight isn’t over. Democrats agree we must guard against the right-wing campaign to suppress the vote and rig our democracy in favor of big donors and corporations. And virtually everyone across the political spectrum – from ultra-conservatives to ultra-progressives – agrees that corrupt, anonymous ‘dark money’ influence over our government must end. The big, anonymous dark-money schemers can only hold back the will of the American people so long. We will continue the fight against voter suppression and dark-money corruption until we’ve passed a strong version of the For the People Act that includes my DISCLOSE Act. Our democracy depends on it.”
