Whitehouse Statement on Kavanaugh Nomination for SCOTUS

Washington, DC – Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement regarding the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to be an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court:

“The American people can’t help but think the system is rigged when, in case after case, a 5-4 partisan majority develops such a pattern of decisions in favor of Republicans at the polls and big business, well, everywhere.  This past term alone, Justice Roberts’s 5-4 majority eroded workers’ right to organize for fair pay and treatment in the workplace, ignored doctored election districts that deprive voters’ equal say in their democracy, upheld President Trump’s shameful discrimination on the basis of religion, and denied women crucial information about their health care and family planning options.  Now a woman’s right to choose, Americans’ health care, and much more is on the line.

“Special interests approved this nominee.  The confirmation process will be powered by massive, secretive spending by their phony front groups.  That’s why Brett Kavanaugh must convince me he can actually be independent.  I, along with the American people, will not tolerate a rigged system anymore.”
