Whitehouse Statement on Selection of Christopher Wray for FBI Director

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement on President Donald Trump’s selection of Christopher Wray to serve as Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation:

“Christopher Wray knows the Justice Department, is not a politician, and has a background in federal law enforcement.  Those were my minimum qualifications for the next Director.  Mr. Wray will need to demonstrate that he has the necessary respect for the people and work of the FBI and the Department of Justice.  Above all, he will need to show his commitment to protecting the Bureau’s independence.  That independence is more important than ever given the inevitable conflicts with the interests of the man who sits in the Oval Office.  I look forward to getting the necessary assurances as the Judiciary Committee considers his nomination.”
