Whitehouse Statement on Supreme Court Gerrymandering Decision

Washington, DC – Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision in the gerrymandering case Rucho v. Common Cause:

“What are the chances that if partisan gerrymandering were a Democratic technique generating counter-majority Democratic political advantage that the Republicans on the Court would have rendered this decision?  Pretty slim given their record.

“The Republican donor take-over of the Supreme Court continues under Chief Justice Roberts.  Today’s ruling is a 5-4 decision that benefits Republicans at the polls at the expense of Americans’ voice in their own democracy.  Add this to the list of 73 5-4 partisan decisions the Roberts Five have delivered for big Republican donor interests.

“The predicate of this decision, that these questions are ‘non-justiciable’ is disproven by the fact that these questions actually were adjudicated by the courts below, readily, consistently, and very sensibly.”
