Whitehouse Statement on Trump Supreme Court List

Washington, DC – Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement on President Donald Trump’s list of potential Supreme Court nominees:

“We know that big right-wing donors have spent hundreds of millions on a dark money campaign to capture our courts. The president’s list is an effort to harness the political power of that operation to his own electoral benefit. It’s a continuation of the list he made in his last campaign; ‘in-sourcing’ to the White House the court capture machine’s central command organization, the Federalist Society. There’s a plan behind the scores of extreme right-wing partisan judges Trump and Mitch McConnell have packed onto America’s most powerful courts – big donor interests want judges they can rely on to deliver win after win in their favor.

“The real issue isn’t who’s on the list, it’s who’s behind the list. The American people deserve to know which special interests handed the president these names and what business those special interests have before our courts. The wholesale right-wing capture of our courts won’t end until we know the full truth. Follow the money.”
