Climate Change: Will Congress Listen to the National Academy of Sciences?

When Congress received the report it commissioned, "America's Climate Choices," from the National Academy of Sciences in 2011, Congress failed to take action.

The report found that "climate change is occurring...and poses significant risks for a broad range of human and natural systems."

Senator Whitehouse took to the floor of the Senate to ask his colleagues to review the report's findings and to take action. He reminded them that we have not solved the problem of climate change and that we can not afford to ignore it.

In this speech on the Senate floor, Senator Whitehouse urged the extension of a renewable energy tax credit grant program as part of a final compromise bill on Bush-era tax cuts. The grant program, which was first established by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, is set to expire at the end of this year. The program allows renewable energy projects to receive a direct cash grant instead of a tax credit. It has assisted a number of Rhode Island clean energy projects and promises to support many more worthwhile, job-creating initiatives.
